Listener

Luke 1:8-23, 39-63
'Not so', she said,
voice more soft yet firm than ever,
'He shall be called John.'

What kind of listening is this
wilderness listening
pain-wrought,
humble,
tough,
not heeding traditions of family
and friends?

Elizabeth had heard another Voice
coming from the holiest place,
insisting this baby
was different
to any she had ever hoped,
dreamed,
prayed.

This frail fruit of her womb would grow
to be the strongest Voice
echoing from Spirited desert,
calling Israel
to a new boldness
in the strangest of places,
to make ready for the wilderness God
of locusts and wild honey.
