Footprints Unseen

Psalm 77:19 'Your way was through the sea, Your path, through the mighty waters; yet Your footprints were unseen.'
(New Revised Standard Version)
Sometimes the way has been
across uncharted waters.
No maps, none at all:
the only thing sure
being the call to risk
everything on wind and wave.

Or so it seemed
with smarting eyes, blistered hands,
aching limbs.

But later,
in the stillness of evening,
with sweat's saltiness a memory,
the conviction grows
that another hand had gripped the tiller,
helped plot the course,
set the sails,
shown the way
in the stinging, crashing sea.

The waters cannot hold, display,
after all,
footprints.
