The Strengthening

John 1:2-13
What a struggle:
to open my eyes
in the face
of light.

Thinking
those piercing rays
an intrusion,
splintering webs of nerves
behind eyelid squint,
feeling light the pain inflicter,
eye reddener,
branding dark burning holes
in the tenderest parts.

Not dreaming the friendship
and the nurturing
of the One
who comes as
light,
rarely seen,
snuffed out, it seemed
at Golgotha's
Festival of Darkness:
always seeking
to melt
the hardened heart
with a power
from beyond
     (colours fade,
     buildings crumble,
     leaves fall,
     faces crease,
     despots die,
     leaders lose).

But this light will
fire the readied
waiting soul
with incandescent
strength.

Always.
