Red Sea

Exodus 14:10-16
Red sea of the shimmering heat.
is this journey's end,
after our faithing, following, dreaming?
Has freedom after slavery-anguish
celebrating in laughter,
dancing the sand,
come to this?

Would You bleed
our little faith
mercilessly
in this desert heat
buzzing with flies
while all is carrion-searching,
bone-bleaching,
hyena-shrieking -

all our futures sucked into this
     maddening sea of our tears?

Grant stillness of racing heart,
quietness of mind,
to be companioned
strongly
where we could not otherwise
tread.
