In War, Timing Is Everything

We're having us a war (in Iraq) but
It seems I got sent home early...
Not to complain, but perhaps I missed the point?
The upshot is the bullet in my leg
Earned I guess while my nose got out of joint;
Real hard to figure, this war business.

So where does it say. in the
Operating manual of war,
Laid out plain and simple,
Sort of,
That pain goes with the job?
I went there (to Iraq) to fight, a
Cause which seemed so good, not to
Earn a medal, not to come home in a box.
